German-built Mercedes vehicles carry WDB, WDC or WDD prefixes; SUVs from the Alabama plant begin 4JG. The more useful output of a decode, though, is the chassis generation — the W-code that Mercedes specialists and parts suppliers actually work from.
That code tells you which generation you are looking at and, with the model year, whether it sits before or after the mid-cycle facelift. Both facts affect parts compatibility, known fault patterns and price, and neither is reliably stated in a used listing.
Where the decode stops
A decode describes the car as the factory released it, and nothing after that. Accidents, salvage or rebuilt titles, wound-back odometers and years of skipped servicing are all events, recorded against the vehicle over time rather than stamped into its identification number — so they surface only in a paid history report. On a Mercedes-Benz that report costs a fraction of what one missed fault would.
